Putting an End to Senseless Violence on Black Bodies

By , CPE Staff

This all started as a bold, audacious idea.  And thanks to the contributions of generous donors, we've accomplished so much over the last 15 years. At CPE, we focus on Black liberation through the lens of public safety. In these final days of 2023, we can’t help but reflect on all we’ve achieved in this work, even as public interest wanes and the current political climate threatens to undo the progress we’ve made.

At CPE, we reject the notion that public safety is secured through police alone. We strive to support elected leaders, local activists, and change-minded law enforcement officials who passionately believe investing in upstream solutions—away from punishment—can prevent public safety crises.

We must make it easier for those in power—electeds, community leaders, and law enforcement—to move more boldly toward justice, eradicating the vicious legacies of slavery in public safety that continue to this day. We strive to improve the current systems while creating radical new ones better aligned with what Black communities need, because this is a human issue affecting us all.

Will you give before the year ends to protect Black lives?

We use science to promote justice, center communities, and work within systems to improve public safety outcomes. We are well-positioned to lead this work. After the lynching of George Floyd and the ensuing global protests, our audacious vision remains—bridging the divide in communities disproportionately impacted by racist policing, unlocking the full promise of those unifying months in 2020.

This is where CPE is going in a nation that has always needed both institutional evolution and visionary imagination to make progress toward the version of itself it claims to be. The most significant progress on the long road towards Black liberation has always been achieved at moments when Black folks have been committed in their need to change existing systems and simultaneously committed in their insistence on new ones that are built with the idea of full Black humanity embedded in the fabric of their creation.

As we prepare to hit the ground running in 2024 with renewed energy, addressing systemic issues in public safety head-on, the time to double down on developing public safety solutions that will put an end to senseless, systemic violence on Black bodies is now. Please join us in this fight by donating before 2023 comes to a close.
