CPLE Affiliated Sheriff Meets with President Obama to Discuss Gun Control

On Monday, Jan. 28, 2013, President Barack Obama met with law enforcement leaders to discuss tough new gun legislation. Obama said law enforcement officials, who deal with these matters every day, are critical stakeholders in the gun debate. Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie, head of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), was among those at the White House meeting. Sheriff Gillespie, who has worked with the CPLE to diversify the LVMPD, stated that too many high-quality weapons are in the hands of criminals.  He advocates for a law requiring a background check for every gun purchase and believes other measures should be employed to keep guns out of the hands of those who shouldn't have them. However, Sheriff Gillespie noted that a larger problem, which also needs to be addressed, is the issue of violent crime in American communities.
